As you can see above, the scarab was not used in the traditional alphabet but it was used as a symbol of representation of a meaning. Depending on the context it could mean anything from good luck, to transformation to the god Khepri or Re. Egyptian hieroglyphs can be ambiguous sometimes, and are difficult to decipher based off its uses of symbols for sounds and representation of its depiction. i.e a lion could be an L or it could be a lion, only context can tell.
